The Fight for Catholic Votes Intensifies

Recent PRRI data shows that President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden are going in opposite directions among white Catholics. Trump’s favorability among white Catholics is down to 38%, while Biden’s has gone up from 40% in July to 66% in August. The Trump campaign is trying to shift that trend by claiming Biden’s running mate, Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), is anti-Catholic. “Harris, for her part, is adopting Biden’s listen-first approach to religious outreach, meeting with 100 leaders from multiple Christian denominations the first Saturday after joining the ticket,” reports The New York Times.

Academy Awards Detail New Diversity Requirements for Best Picture

On Tuesday the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced new qualifications for films to be eligible for the coveted Best Picture Academy Award. The detailed qualifications incentivize film studios to employ members of traditionally underrepresented groups, as well as highlight stories focusing on those groups. PRRI data from 2017 shows that young people ages 15-24 believed that many underrepresented groups were portrayed negatively in film and on television. Almost two-thirds (66%) said Black people were portrayed negatively and 59% believed Hispanic people were portrayed negatively. More than half (55%) believed that LGBT people were portrayed negatively and 45% believed women were portrayed negatively.

Trump Exaggerates Environmental Resume on Campaign Trail

In 2019, 49% of the country rated climate change as a critical issue, including 72% of Democrats, 50% of independents, and only 17% of Republicans. President Trump, who has often spoken of exiting the Paris Agreement on climate change, touted his environmental resume at a recent event in Florida. According to Trump, he is the “No. 1 environmental president since Teddy Roosevelt.” Annie Karni and Lisa Friedman disagree with that notion, in a recent piece for The New York Times. “Mr. Trump’s up-is-down claims about his environmental record… were the latest example of the gaslighting campaign he is running to win over voters in battleground states by trying to ignore or misrepresent his own record,” they write.

Broncos Plan to Welcome Fans Back for Week Three

Reports circulated this week indicating that the Denver Broncos would try to welcome some fans back to the stadium for their week three matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “Gov. Jared Polis has been well-versed for weeks in the Broncos safety plan at the stadium. Brittany Bowlen, who is chairing the Broncos’ COVID task force, submitted an extensive stadium safety plan to the governor’s office a few weeks ago,”
